Inner Edge, in conjunction with the Icearium and the Knoxville Figure Skating Club, is pleased to announce information on the upcoming Fall 2008 Synchro Season, which will run from August 4 through December 19, 2008. This is a full synchro program that will include both skills training and learning a program or programs. A summary of information pertinent to the Fall 2008 Season is provided below. For more details on Inner Edge policies and rules, and for a copy of the registration form, please see the Team Handbook.

Placement Clinics
Skaters interested in Synchronized Skating must come to one of the following two clinics at the Icearium:
  • Saturday, July 19, 2008: 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
  • Saturday, July 26, 2008: 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
These clinics are a fun, relaxed and casual event designed to determine which of the Inner Edge Teams is the best placement for the individual skater. Participation in one of the clinics does not obligate a skater to join one of the teams, and is a good way to find out a bit about Synchro and decide whether this is an activity you wish to pursue. Advanced skating is not a requirement for participation in Inner Edge programs, but skaters coming to the clinics should already be able to do the following:
  • March to music
  • One foot glide 20'
  • Backward two-footed skating
  • Backward and forward swizzles and pumps
  • Snowplow Stop

Joining a Team for Fall 2008
After attending the placement clinics, each skater will be offered a spot on one of the Inner Edge Teams and will have the opportunity to accept or decline further participation. Skaters joining the program are taking on a commitment of both time and money, and upon registration must pay a commitment fee of $200. Skaters will be registered as a team member through US Figure Skating, and if not already a member of that organization, must join at the appropriate level (ask the Team Coach for the Team on which the skater is assigned).

Team skaters will be expected to attend all practices and competitions, unless specifically excused by the Team Coach for good and valid reasons. Skaters are also expected to learn new skills during the season and to spend at least an hour per week on the ice, in addition to the Team practices.

Practice Sessions
  • Youth Team #1 will have on-ice, off-ice, and teamwork sessions througout the season. Off-ice sessions are scheduled for Friday afternoons from 6:30 - 7:00. On-ice sessions are Fridays from 7:10 - 8:00. Additional practices may be scheduled to prepare for competitions or exhibitions.
  • Youth Team #2 will practice on-ice on Fridays from 7:10 - 8:00. Additional practices may be scheduled to prepare for competitions or exhibitions.
  • Adult Team on-ice practices are on Fridays from 7:10 - 8:00. Additional practices may be scheduled to prepare for competitions or exhibitions.
For detailed team schedules and changes to these schedules, please see the page for the individual teams (see links at top of page) or refer to the Team Calendar.

Competitions and Exhibitions
Youth Team #1 will be expected to attend competitions and exhibit locally at selected events. Competitions planned for 2008 are Hillsborough, NC on November 2nd and Charleston, WV on November 22. For detailed competition policies and costs, see the Inner Edge Team Handbook.

Youth Team #2 and the Adult Team are encouraged to attend the competitions outlined above plus local exhibitions. Decisions on competitions will be determined after the season begins.

Basic Costs will include the following:
  • Commitment Fee (will apply towards ice time and administrative costs): $200
  • Additional Ice Time Fees (TBD depending on number of skaters on each team): $78 - $156
  • Coaching Fees (TBD depending on number of skaters on each team):
    • Youth Team #1: $90 - $180
    • Youth Team #2: $62.50 - $125
    • Adult Team: $62.50 - $125
In addition, there may be other costs involved, as follows:

  • Team Jackets: $50-55 (Note: one-time expense not required for returning members)
  • Costumes: TBD (Note: only if attending competitions; may carry over from year to year)
  • Competition Fees: TBD
  • Travel Expenses: TBD
  • Hotel Expenses: TBD
Please note that skating team members also pay a pro-rata share of the travel and hotel expenses for coaches. Also note that some of these expenses may be partially or wholly defrayed through the Inner Edge sponsorship fundraising efforts or individual team fundraisers.

Once a skater has committed to join an Inner Edge Team and has paid the commitment fee, payments for the remaining basic costs are expected on the dates specified in the Team Calendar whether or not the skater has missed practices or has decided to withdraw from further participation during the session.

Fundraising Events and Sponsorships
Inner Edge is committed to working towards lowering the cost of the sport by working as a team to raise sponsorship money through the community. All team members and families are encouraged to participate in these efforts led by the Fundraising Chairperson and the Synchronized Skating Coordinator.
  • There will be at least 3 fundraising events undertaken by Inner Edge as an organization-wide activity (such as Skate-a-thon, Car Wash etc.). Each skater is expected to participate in at least one such activity. A skater who is unable to participate in any of the planned activities will be requested to make a minimum $25 donation to the Inner Edge. Monies raised in an organization-wide fundraiser will be applied directly toward (1) payment of ice time fees, (2) payment of coaching fees, and (3) payment of competition costs. Such payments will apply equally across all teams and skaters.

  • A corporate sponsorship program will be developed and coordinated by the Fundraising Chair and the Synchronized Skating Coordinator. 80% of any money collected through such efforts will be used for overall team expenses in the same order as stated above.

  • Individuals and small groups of skaters may take on fundraising activities to lower their costs for the season. Monies gained from individual efforts will count towards defraying participants' personal costs. Balances remaining after particular synchro sessions may be applied to future sessions or given back to the skater.
